Privacy Policy

Introduction

ToRead is committed to respecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy describes how information is handled when you use the ToRead iOS app.

Key point: We do not run servers that store your reading data. Your content stays on your device and (optionally) in your personal iCloud account.

Your Data Stays With You

What you create in ToRead

Depending on how you use the app, ToRead may store information such as:

  • Reading sessions: start/end timestamps, duration, and optional notes you add
  • Optional book context: titles and lightweight metadata you choose to enter
  • App preferences: theme choices and reminder time settings

We do not collect analytics or track you

ToRead does not:

  • create user accounts
  • collect usage analytics or advertising identifiers
  • track you across apps or websites

Where Your Data Is Stored

ToRead stores data in the following places, depending on your settings:

  • On-device storage: data is stored locally on your iPhone.
  • iCloud / CloudKit (optional): if you enable iCloud sync, your data is synced via your personal Apple iCloud account.
  • App Group storage (app + widgets/live activity): certain timer state needed for widgets and Live Activities may be mirrored within the shared app group container on your device.

We do not have access to your local data or your iCloud data.

How the App Works With Your Data

Your data is used on-device to:

  • run the reading timer and keep it consistent across background/foreground
  • show your reading history and reflections
  • schedule local notifications for gentle reminders (if enabled)
  • update widgets and Live Activities

No Data Sharing

Because we do not collect your reading data, we do not sell, share, or disclose it to third parties.

Feedback & Ideas

ToRead includes a board where you can suggest ideas and report problems (Settings → About → Feedback & ideas). It runs on our own server, kept apart from your reading data, which never goes there.

So the board opens quickly, the app registers your installation with that server when it starts. It sends your language, the app version, the iOS version and the device model, and gets back a random identifier that stays on your device. Apple's App Attest confirms the request comes from the genuine app. No name, email address, Apple Account or advertising identifier is sent.

If you post, reply or vote, we store that with your random identifier. Posts are shown to other ToRead users without any name. To screen posts for abuse, translate them for readers of other languages and group similar ideas, their text is processed by Google's Gemini API. When a post is reported, we receive an email about it through Resend.

To have something you posted removed, or your identifier deleted, write to toread@framara.net.

Third-Party Services

ToRead relies on a small number of third-party services: Apple's, a purchase processor, and the services behind the feedback board described above.

Apple iCloud / CloudKit

If you enable iCloud sync, Apple processes your data as part of providing iCloud services. Apple's terms and privacy policy apply.

Apple App Store / StoreKit

ToRead Plus, the optional one-time purchase (and, in earlier versions, tips), is sold through the App Store. Apple processes the payment: we never receive your payment details or your Apple Account.

RevenueCat (In-App Purchase infrastructure)

We use RevenueCat as a processor to check that a purchase is real and to restore it on your other devices. What it receives is the App Store receipt for the transaction, a random anonymous identifier generated for your install, the last time the app was used, and basic technical facts about the device such as its model and operating system. It never receives your name, your email address, your Apple Account, or anything about your reading: that never leaves your device and your iCloud. RevenueCat acts only on our instructions, and the data is not used for advertising, not sold, and not combined with anything from other apps.

Your Rights and Choices

You can:

  • access and manage your data directly inside the app
  • delete sessions and other data you created
  • disable iCloud sync at any time
  • delete the app to remove on-device data
  • ask us to delete anything you posted on the feedback board

Data Security

Your data security depends on:

  • your device security settings (passcode/Face ID)
  • Apple's iCloud security features (if iCloud sync is enabled)

We cannot access or recover your data if it is deleted.

Children's Privacy

ToRead is intended for a general audience and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we do, we will post the updated policy and change the "Last updated" date.
